Kenyan-British artist Michael Armitage (b. 1984, Nairobi) is best known for his colourful and dreamlike paintings, that weave multiple visual narratives drawn from historical and current events, popular culture, news media and recollections of Kenya. Armitage paints on Lubugo, a traditional bark cloth from Uganda, which is beaten over a period of days creating a natural material and revealing holes and coarse indents when stretched taught. Armitage earned a BFA from the Slade School of Fine Art (London) in 2007 and an MA from the Royal Academy Schools (London) in 2010. He currently lives and works between Nairobi and London.
